Russian police free tycoon's son from kidnappers

MOSCOW (AP) -- The kidnapped son of a Russian software tycoon had been freed unharmed by Russian special forces, police and the tycoon's company said Monday.

Police spokesman Viktor Biryukov told Russian television that intelligence officers and OMON special forces took part in the operation to free 20-year-old Ivan Kaspersky. Five people were detained on suspicion of kidnapping.

Kaspersky Lab, which is owned and managed by his father Evgeny Kaspersky, said in a statement that no ransom was paid. It said Ivan is now in a safe place.

FAA falls short on plan to aid fatigued workers

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Federal Aviation Administration told a government watchdog nearly two years ago that it was prepared to let air traffic controllers sleep or rest during work shifts when they weren't directing aircraft. It still hasn't happened.

When the FAA proposed new limits on airline pilots' work schedules to prevent fatigue last year, it rejected its own research recommending that pilots be allowed to take naps during the cruise phase of flight - typically most of a flight when the plane is neither climbing nor descending - so that they are refreshed and alert during landings.

And an FAA committee that has been working for several years on new work rules to prevent fatigue among night-shift airline mechanics has made little progress, said one committee member. Allowing naps during breaks on overnight shifts was dismissed as a nonstarter.

Sheep growers benefit from low supply, high demand

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- In his 33 years raising sheep in West Texas, Glen Fisher has never seen it so good.

Demand by U.S. consumers is up, imports are down and prices have soared.

"You have almost what you can call a perfect storm," said Fisher, 64, who has about 3,100 animals on his acreage near Sonora. "The great part is we have record prices for lambs - the highest ever by a whole lot."

Last year's May delivery of lamb fetched about $1.39 a pound; this year the price is around $2.20 a pound, said Fisher, the immediate past president of American Sheep Industry Association.

Pope leads faithful in Palm Sunday outdoor Mass

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Pope Benedict XVI, leading a huge crowd at Palm Sunday outdoor Mass, lauded man's technological accomplishments but lamented that his increasing abilities can also be used for evil.

Waving palm fronds and olive branches - symbols of peace - pilgrims, tourists and Romans packed St. Peter's Square on a sunny, breezy day for the start of Holy Week ceremonies. When the ceremony began, the square was nearly full, but by its end, a crowd numbering in the tens of thousands spilled over into the broad boulevard which leads to the Tiber.

Palm Sunday's liturgy recalls Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, and Benedict's homily reflected on how the triumphs of men and women are also tempered by selfishness and evil.

Doughty leads Kings past Sharks 4-0 in Game 2

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Drew Doughty had two goals and two assists, Jonathan Quick made 34 saves and the Los Angeles Kings beat the San Jose Sharks 4-0 in Game 2 on Saturday night to even their first-round series at one game apiece.

Jack Johnson and Kyle Clifford also scored for the Kings, who bounced back from an overtime loss in Game 1 to seize home-ice advantage heading back to Los Angeles for Game 3 on Tuesday night.

The Sharks took too many undisciplined penalties and were unable to generate many good offensive chances against Quick, drawing the ire of their usually supportive fans who booed the home team sporadically throughout the game. Antti Niemi allowed the four goals on 23 shots to lose for the first time in four postseason starts at the Shark Tank.
